The Pico Ruivo hike offers multiple trails catering to hikers of all skill levels. The classic route from Achada do Teixeira is perfect for those seeking a scenic journey through lush forests and rocky slopes. For the more adventurous souls, the traverse from Pico do Arieiro presents a thrilling challenge with its steep ascents and exhilarating vistas. Walk through tunnels, uphill path, downhill path and challenge yourself with this real workout. Whichever Pico Ruivo Hike route you choose, be prepared for a journey that will push your limits and leave you with memories to last a lifetime. Personally I think it is so worth it, just the overall experience of the Pico Ruivo hike is something you don’t want to miss out on.
The Journey
Personally we choose to take on this hike adventure with an organized tour. As you might know, Madeira is perfect assessable with a car. We choose to do the route from the one rock formation to the other. The hike is amazing, but parking can be a bit difficult. As you probably won’t do the climb reversed again. With a guided tour, you can still do the Pico Ruivo hike all by yourself, while the tour arranges the transport. After the hike you will be picked up at the designated parking lot.
On to the hike itself. With a guided tour, you can choose one of two options. A sunset hike or a sunrise. Personally we chose the sunrise option as we wanted to do the hike in the morning. We were picked up by our transfer, and brought up to one of the first rock formations. Just stepping out of the car, you already have some amazing panoramic views. At that moment the tour hasn’t even began yet. After a quick toilet break, the hike can really begin. As you set foot on the trail, you’re greeted by the symphony of nature: birdsong, rustling leaves, and the distant rush of waterfalls. Each step forward is a testament to your determination, as you navigate rocky paths and winding switchbacks towards the summit. Along the way, take time to marvel at the island’s unique flora and fauna, from vibrant wildflowers to elusive bird species. Pause at scenic viewpoints to catch your breath and soak in the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you.
Reaching the Peak
As you ascend higher, the world below shrinks into insignificance, replaced by an endless expanse of sky and sea. Finally, as you reach the summit of Pico Ruivo, a sense of euphoria washes over you. Behold the panoramic views that stretch to the horizon, a kaleidoscope of colors and textures that defy description. Take time to savor this triumph, to bask in the glory of your accomplishment and to reflect on the journey that brought you here. This is one of my favorite memories of our vacation.

Your adventure doesn’t have to end at the summit of Pico Ruivo. Consider extending your hike by exploring the surrounding trails and discovering hidden gems tucked away in the island’s wilderness.
