What to do in Brussels: A Guide to the Best Things to See and Do

Brussels, the capital city of the Belgium. Not only is it the capital city of Belgium but also of the European Union. Central Brussels is home to numerous prominent locations and cultural landmarks, making it a hub of historical significance and urban charm. A city with such a big influence and importance, what else has the city to offer? Well more than enough, that’s for sure! So if you are ready to learn more about this amazing city, let’s get started!

Visit the Atomium

The Atomium, built in the year 1958 is something that you can’t miss when visiting the capital city. The Atomium was created by André Waterkeyn for the world exhibition. The monument presents an iron crystal but then enlarged, with an hight of 102 meters you definitely won’t miss it. Five out of the nine bolls are open to visit, making it a great, impressive and cultural activity.

Another nearby attraction worth visiting is the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, which includes the Magritte Museum and the Old Masters Museum, offering a diverse collection of 20,000 artworks.

See Manneken Pis

You could say Manneken Pis is the Brussels mascotte. The symbol of the city is located right in the city center, making it easy to reach. The original Manneken Pis statue is housed in the Brussels City Museum, which is part of the historic Maison du Roi. The statue has a history of different stories, when taking a guided tour to Brussels they will also tell you more about Manneken Pis. The city museum plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage of Brussels. Besides visiting the statue, definitely also try out the candy (drop) called Manneken Pis. I can honestly say that this is my all-time kind of licorice!

Walk around de Grote Markt

A UNESCO World Heritage Site you can’t miss when visiting Brussels due to its cultural and historical significance. The Grand Place is surrounded by beautiful guild houses, the town hall, and lots of history. The town hall, located centrally within the Grand Place, serves as a historical landmark and showcases stunning Gothic and Baroque architecture. De Grote Markt is also a fun place to enjoy a refreshing drink or something to eat. Only thing to be aware of is that it’s pricier due to being the hotspot for tourism.

Visit the Belgium Strip book centrum

Belgium is world known for its famous strip books. A lot of artist our found in this small but important country. When walking through Brussels you will find multiple signs of all the famous strip books. Street art is a significant aspect of cultural exploration in Brussels, particularly through its unique Comic Book Route, which showcases murals of beloved comic characters. Personally I just found it really cool to see some characters from my early childhood back like wallpaintings. Besides that you will also find many strip book shops with all kinds of stuff.

The Comics Art Museum is another must-visit destination for comic enthusiasts, featuring extensive exhibits, including famous Belgian comic creations like The Smurfs, and a reading room with thousands of comic books translated into multiple languages.

Try a Belgium Waffle

They are called Belgium Brussels waffels so ofcourse you need to try them at least once when visiting Brussels. Waffle spots are found all over the city and actually all over Belgium. My favorite type is with strawberries and white chocolate. The stands will have a big variety of choices, so there will always be something for anyone.

While enjoying your waffles, take the opportunity to explore the stunning Art Nouveau architecture around the city, which adds to the rich cultural experience of Brussels.

Taste Belgium beers

Belgium, the land of beers. A fun activity is definitely a beer tasting. All throughout the city you will find different spots that offer great beer tastings. Don’t forget to take something with you when leaving Belgium. Brussels has multiple stores selling typical stuff like stickers and magnets but also beer packages. Perfect for gifting!
