Bangkok, the capital and biggest city of Thailand. The city, located in the middle of Thailand, serves as a major gateway to Southeast Asia, offering many different activities to do while visiting. But with so much to choose from, how do you decide which activities are worth your time? In this blog, we will tell you more about the best things to do in Bangkok. Let’s start exploring!
Visit a Floating Market
Kicking off this list with an activity known for its rich culture and long history. The floating market, although sometimes a bit touristic, is something you can only find in Thailand. Some of the popular floating markets are easily accessible from downtown Bangkok. Explore some of the oldest floating markets of the country while in Bangkok. During our visit, we chose a tour via Getyourguide. That way you will be able to combine it with visiting the train track that walks straight through a street.
Shop till you drop
Bangkok is a real shopping city. Maybe that’s not your first thought when thinking of the capital city, but Bangkok is perfect for spending your money on all things like clothing. Visitors can find exquisite Thai silks and unique Thai souvenirs in Bangkok’s shopping malls. The city has multiple shopping malls, going from specific theme’s to some of the biggest and most expensive malls.
A must visit is definitely Icon Siam. Located near the river walking through the city. Icon Siam is a real statement in Bangkok. Experience the luxury of one of the most breathtaking malls of the city.
Lumpini Park
Warning! When afraid of big lizards, definitely consider not visiting Lumpini Park! For those who want to see some big animals just walking through the park, than Lumpini Park is for you!
Lumpini park is what Central Park is for New York. Bangkok’s version is located in the middle of the city center and perfect accessible while exploring the city. While walking through the green oasis you will stumble upon large lizards. The animals will leave you alone as long as you don’t come to close. Making it the perfect place to see these animals while still being free.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
Be prepared to go on a full shopping spree at the biggest weekend market of the whole world. When planning to visit Bangkok, I would always try to at least be there during one weekend day. This way you can experience the amazing Chatuchak Weekend Market.
The market has over 15.000 stalls all selling different things, ranging from clothing to art and antique. It’s a great place to find Thai souvenirs and Thai silks. I would easily spend a few hours to a whole day at the market, there is just so much to see! Chatuchak Weekend Market is a whole experience on itself and definitely can’t be missed.
Drinks at a rooftop Bar
What to do in a city full with skyscrapers? Visit a rooftop bar of course! Some rooftop bars offer stunning views of the Chao Phraya River. When you are looking for a cool and aesthetic bar, perfect for that one amazing picture. Then definitely check out Tichuca. The bar with the big tree in the center is amazing to get a complete overview of the city. Although be prepared for a lot of people and maybe even standing in line.
When you are looking for a nice drink and cosy environment, we would definitely advise checking out ‘Sugar Ray, You’ve Just Been Poisoned’. Yes that is the real name! This speakeasy bar is found inside of the restaurant. Not sure which door to take? Just ask any other employees, they are happy to guide you. We had an amazing evening here with some award winning cocktail masters.
Food Tour through China Town
Bangkok has so many great food options, we can’t even touch 1 procent in this blog. One way to touch a few amazing dishes is through a guided food tour. Not only do you get to taste many different local dishes. You will also get to learn more about specifics area through the eyes from a local.
Our favorite food tour was definitely the one that focussed on China Town.
Visit the Grand Palace
We are ending the list with another classic. Visiting the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace is home to the Emerald Buddha, one of the holiest Buddhist temples in Thailand. A palace that up until day is even still in use. What really is amazing is the beautiful traditional temples you see but also the history that comes with them. It really feels like stepping into Bangkok many years back. It feels really traditional.
Although it can be quite busy at the palace, we still think it definitely is a must-visit when traveling to Bangkok. Visitors should also consider visiting a few temples nearby, including Wat Pho, which is famous for its Reclining Buddha and its massage school. Tickets can be bought at the palace self, only thing important is to dress appropriately and pay your respects. When keeping that in mind you will have the best time ever!
