The Most Romantic Getaways in Europe.

My permanent home base is currently in the Netherlands, providing an ideal starting point to easily and swiftly discover various romantic destinations in Europe. Thanks to the excellent infrastructure and numerous flight options, you can find yourself in a new destination before you know it.

I have a penchant for exploring new places with my partner, embarking on journeys together, trying out new dishes, and, above all, creating beautiful memories. We make it a point to find several moments in the year to escape together. Due to our location, neighboring countries like Belgium and Germany are easily accessible, and within the Netherlands, there are plenty of beautiful places to explore.

In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through the most romantic weekend getaways in Europe. Perfect for a getaway with your significant other, friends, or, of course, solo while still basking in that delightful atmosphere.

Paris, France – City of Love and Lights

This particular destination holds a special place in my heart, becoming one of my favorites over several years since this is one of the romantic getaways near me. My first visit to this metropolis was in 2017, and it immediately captured my heart. Given that Paris is just a 5-hour drive from my home, it’s the perfect choice for a delightful long weekend.

Paris exudes beauty in every season, but my personal favorite has to be the summer. Picture-perfect weather, blossoming surroundings, bustling terraces at restaurants, and ideal conditions for walks through the City of Love. Paris offers various luxury accommodations with spacious rooms and spa treatments, to enjoy a perfect romantic getaway.

When thoughts turn to Paris, they conjure images of novels, enchanting snapshots, and delectable cuisine, a perfect combination for a romantic getaway. Yet, it’s worth noting that the city offers more than enough to see and experience beyond its romantic vibe.

Romantic Avtivities:

  • Boat tour on the Seine:
For a romantic activity, consider joining one of the boat tours that sail the Seine. Get lost in beautiful views and cuddle up with your partner. Evening boat trips provide the full experience with the twinkling lights and cool breeze, passing by iconic buildings.
  • Eiffel Tower evening visit:
Visit the Eiffel Tower during the evening. Lay out a blanket in front of the tower, enjoy some good weather, great talks and perhaps some travel board games. It’s a perfect spot for a memorable evening with your loved one.
  • Take a lovely walk through the gardens:
In the middle of the city center and close to Le Louvre, the city boasts beautiful gardens. Especially during the spring and summer periods, the flowers are in full bloom. It’s a delight to find a spot in the park and enjoy the surroundings. My experience was made even better by a delicious organic ice cream available at a charming stand in the park. And yes, the ice cream was truly delightful.

Venice, Italy – Floating on Romance

Venice, a city of canals and charms, offers a unique getaway for a romantic getaway. Explore the romantic canals and enjoy the unique city. Venice is just such a special city. Feeling like walking through a place only described in books and movies. There is no other place than Venice. No wonder that Venice is the location for so many movies. Not only romcoms but also action packed movies. With my latest favorite, ‘A murder in Venice’. So what is there to do in this floating city?

Romantic Activities:

  • Gondola ride:
One thing you can’t miss during your romantic visit in Venice? A gondola ride! Book a private boat tour through the Grand Canal. Drift along the beautiful streets and architecture of the city. Don’t forget to mind your head while passing under picture worthy bridges. Want to make it extra special? Enjoy a serenade of the experienced gondolier. For sure that you will have that romantic movie feeling!
  • Mask Painting Workshop:
Engage in a unique experience and romantic activity by participating in a traditional Venetian mask painting workshop. Create your own masks as a unique souvenir. While the workshop is fun, it also shows you a bit of the rich history of the city.
  • Dinner in a Courtyard:
Escape the busy crowds and enjoy an intimate dinner in one of Venice’s hidden courtyards. Many romantic restaurants offer secluded outdoor spaces. The perfect setting for a romantic evening. Where you can find various options, from fine dining restaurants to the most tasteful afternoon tea.

Maastricht, Netherlands – Historical Romance

Maastricht could not be missed on the list of the best romantic getaways. Not only is it a beautiful city, but for me personally it’s only a 1,5 hour drive of my home town a real “hidden gem” in the south of the Netherlands close to the Belgium border.

You can understand that I’v been to this city quite some times. Maastricht, nestled along the riverbanks of the Meuse or in Dutch ‘de Maas’.

The city offers a mix of history and charm. Explore the historical streets and squares and discover the intimate moments. When visiting Maastricht for a weekend getaway, make sure you checkout Beluga Loves You, where I really enjoyed their romantic dinner and sparkling wine.

Romantic Activities:

  • Meuse River Cruise:
Enjoy a romantic cruise along the Meuse River. Enjoy the views of Maastricht from the water and learn about the history of the city. I must say that my tour guide was amazing, with great knowledge of the city and the surroundings. So when you are looking for a cultural and romantic activity? This one should be on your list.
  • Visit Fort St Pieter:
Only a few minutes of the city center lays Fort St Pieter. The fort is even reachable by bike, as that was the way we did it (yes, that is the complete Dutch experience.). Fort St Pieter is perched high above the Meuse river on the south side of the city and is connected with St Pietersberg hill via an intricate system of underground tunnels. The fort dates from around 1700 and is still largely intact. During the tour you will visit the underground tunnel system. The system is marvelous and an experience you can’t miss.
  • Walk through Jekerkwartier:
Explore the charming Jekerkwartier district with your partner. The narrow streets, historic houses and cozy cafes create a romantic atmosphere. For sure don’t miss the romantic courtyard of Bisschopsmolen for a special moment.

Lisbon, Portugal the Romantic getaway

When looking for romantic getaways Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, famous for its vibrant streets and colorful tiles can’t be missed out. Explore the charming alley’s and love the city unique tiles. As a personal fan of al Portugal has to offer, the cities, the food and just the overall aesthetic, Lisbon couldn’t be missed on the list.

There are many hotel options in Lisbon, including luxurious rooms in Four Seasons Ritz where they offer spa services in their full service spa.

Romantic activities:

  • Tram 28 Journey:
Hop on the iconic tram 28 and enjoy a scenic journey through Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods at sunset. Of course this activity is possible to do at any specific time. But I should say that doing it while the colors of the sun are fading, add a romantic touch to this experience.
  • Visit Miradoura:
Explore Lisbon’s miradouros (viewpoints) with your partner. Miradoura da Senhore do Monte and Miradoura da Graça offer panoramic views, creating a romantic setting for quiet moments together.
  • Fado Night:
Immerse yourselves in the soulful melodies of Fado, Portugal’s traditional music genre. Consider attending a live Fado performance in the historic Alfama district while enjoying Portuguese cuisine for the full Lisbon experience. This will be a unforgettable evening for sure!
