In this blog we’re talking about spending a day in the charming city of Breda, Netherlands. Let’s explore its rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant culture. Let’s tell you more about it!
Welcome to Breda: The Pearl of the South
Breda is located in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. With almost 190,000 residents, it is one of the larger cities in the region. The city offers a variety of amenities, including event venues with excellent facilities, seating capacity, and rental availability for potential renters and organizers. Its location makes it easily accessible from both Belgium and other parts of the Netherlands. Breda’s city centre, particularly the docks, highlights its strategic and social significance in the Low Countries. As someone living just 20 minutes from Breda, this city is no secret to me. So with that in mind, let’s explore some food, shopping, and history in Breda!
Grote Markt
No better way to start your day and tour than at one of the main points of Breda, the Grote Markt. Various venues around the Grote Markt offer options for hosting events, with different locations, amenities, and seating capacities to cater to both small and large gatherings. The Grote Markt is the beating heart of the city, surrounded by great restaurants and bustling terraces, making it the perfect place to come together with friends and family. Two of my personal favorite spots here are Mr. Moos and Hart van Breda.
Onze Lieve Vrouwenkerk
While walking through the Grote Markt, there is one building you will definitely not miss: the majestic and most important church of Breda, Onze Lieve Vrouwenkerk (Church of Our Lady). Its central location in the city center makes it easy to visit and marvel at the art of its architecture and historical significance.
The first stone was laid in 1269, and the building process was completed in 1468. It always amazes me how we still have so many buildings in great condition throughout the world.
Kasteel van Breda
As mentioned earlier, Breda has another historical hotspot: Het Kasteel van Breda, or in English, The Castle of Breda. Just a short walk from the Grote Markt brings you to the castle, which began construction in 1353. Just walking around gives you a great view of the castle. Unfortunately, the castle is not always open to visitors as it is still used by the Royal Military Academy.
Although the place is not always open for visitors, you may be lucky and get to experience one of the limited guided tours through the building. Check out the Explore Breda website to see if there are any tours available. But don’t worry if you are not able to take a look inside, as our next stop is right around the corner! Let’s head over to the city park.
Stadspark Valkenberg
Welcome to the city park: Valkenberg. Park Valkenberg is a green oasis in the middle of the city center. Throughout the year, you can experience some great activities in the park. Of course, it is also the perfect spot to relax and escape the bustling city.
Shopping in Breda
After all that relaxing, it’s time to shop in Breda. Breda offers a full shopping experience for all ages, including unique chocolate products that are hand-crafted and hand-painted. One of my favorite shops is located in Breda, so let’s check that one out while exploring the shopping districts. You can eat and enjoy the unique flavors of these chocolates. The delightful taste of the chocolates is something you won’t want to miss. Don’t miss out on the bookstores and other unique local shops!
