Tilburg, a place I have already spoken of before. While I don’t live there anymore, it still holds a very special place in my heart. When traveling to the Netherlands, don’t just stay in Amsterdam or other popular touristic places. Because just like any other country, the Netherlands has so much more to offer like Tilburg! Tilburg is the second-largest city in North Brabant and the 6th largest city in the Netherlands.
In this blog I will tell you more about my favorite things to do in Tilburg as a true local. I have been living in Tilburg for my whole life, and still I got to see and experience new things on a regular base. So let’s dive in to the 8 best things to do in Tilburg.
1. Textile Museum
Tilburg has always been the wool capital in The Netherlands. No wonder that it’s still something that you will notice when visiting the city. When you really want to experience Tilburg’s history, you should definitely check out the Textile Museum. Located just a bit outside of the city centre but still within perfect walking distance.
Another must-visit is the De Pont Museum, a contemporary art museum housed in an old wool-spinning mill. It features mind-boggling exhibits that change throughout the year and is set within the context of Tilburg’s long history.
The Textile Museum gives you an in insight in the history of the city and different textile productions. With visiting the Textile Museum you will see a big piece of Tilburg. That’s why I think it’s a must visit while in Tilburg.
2. Spoorpark
One of Tilburg latest projects, Spoorpark, is an amazing green park right in the city centre. I have spend quite some hours here just chilling with friends or reading a nice book. Spoorpark is the best place to escape the busy city and relax. When the weather is great, you will see many people there just vibing and sometimes even picnicking.
Not only is it just a park, it’s also a place where multiple festivities are being held. One of my favorites being the TREK festival. A festival completely focussed on food trucks that travel through The Netherlands. But also other festivals like music festivals are amazing to visit at Spoorpark.
3. The Gourmet Market
When people ask me for food recommendations in Tilburg? I will always say: The Gourmet Market. A restaurant with a perfect location, next to the train station. The Gourmet Market is a big restaurant with different restaurants inside. No reservation needed, just choose a table and start ordering via the QR code.
What makes this restaurant so special? Well besides that all the food is amazing, you also get to try many different kitchens under one roof. Think of Thai, Japanese, Mexican and ofcourse some Dutch food. The options are endless.
Besides that the overall vibe from the restaurant is also amazing!
4. Shopping in Dwaalgebied
Tilburg is a great place for shopping. Although I would say it’s not the place if you are looking for a full shopping weekend. But still what makes Tilburg such a cool spot is because of its Dwaalgebied. (Dwalen = Wander, Gebied = Area). Dwaalgebied has many cute and cozy shops with things like handmade products, second hands or just very specific stores. Besides all the nice stores there is one other things that let it stand out, the architecture!
5. Doloris Meta Maze
If you are looking for a unique experience, then this is it! Doloris is located in the city center of Tilburg, a city known for its vibrant contemporary art scene. Besides having a nice restaurant and cool rooftop bar, it also has its very own Meta Maze. De Pont Art Gallery, a renowned contemporary art museum, is also nearby, offering a rich cultural experience.
The Meta Maze and what it is is actually a bit of a mystery and secret. Just know that you will be taken into the maze blindfolded. The maze is filled with incredible art what is super cool. But behold, you will need to find, climb and struggle through the maze. Finding your way out will not be that easy when you don’t know what you can expect in the next room, how many rooms even are there? no-one knows….
Doloris Meta Maze is the perfect activity if you want to do something different but amazing! I have been in the maze multiple times and even now it’s still a mystery.
6. Football or Ice hockey?
Tilburg is a real sport city and believe me the people of Tilburg love sports. Two of my favorites are also very popular with other locals, football and Ice Hockey.
So what do you choose? Visit a football game of Willem II and experience the thrill of all the other supporters. Willem II is widely known for its enthusiastic fanbase! Or do you go for something completely different? Ice Hockey! Tilburg Trappers has a great first time that is not even in the Dutch competition anymore! They are currently playing in the German competition what makes for some amazing games.
7. Beekse Bergen or The Efteling
Are you ready to go on a safari? The Beekse Bergse is the perfect place for a day trip to spot some interesting animals. Tilburg offers many day trips, including visits to the Efteling theme park and the Beekse Bergen Safari Park.
The Efteling is the Netherlands’ biggest and most famous theme park, known for its rich history, diverse attractions, and its appeal to fans of theme parks for a fun day out.
Beekse Bergen is around 10/15 minute drive of the city center. Don’t have a car? No problem! Beekse Bergen is well connected with public transport. Easily get in the bus at the central station.
With more than 100 different animals, it not only offers a big variety in species. Beekse Bergen also offers 4 different ways to explore the park. Ofcourse you can walk through the park but besides that you can also get in a safari bus or even a safari boat! That makes 3 but there is one more special way, my personal favorite. With your own car! Yes, you can drive through the safari park and through the animals reservoirs with your own car. Good to know that with your ticket you can choose any of the options and always switch during the day.
8. Tilburgse Kermis
Let’s start of with that the Tilburgse Kermis is amazing, but not a year round event. The Tilburgse kermis is being held at the end of July, each year and is the biggest carnival of the Benelux. The carnival has a length of around 4,5 km through the city center. All the street will be blocked and you can ride the coolest rides.
The Tilburgse Kermis is a real happening when it’s in town. Every year the carnival has so many visitors, also coming for specific days like Pink Monday or White Friday. Since I was a child I have been going to the carnival every year, it’s a must! The carnival is a 10 day event so you will have enough time to explore everything.
