Explore the Biesbosch National Park by Boat and Hike
Embark on a boat tour through the stunning Biesbosch National Park, a unique freshwater tidal area known for its maze of rivers and creeks. Afterward, explore the park on foot with a guided hike through its lush forests and wetlands, spotting wildlife along the way.
I had my first boat trip around 5 years ago. We had an amazing day on the water just relaxing, talking and enjoying the sun. Besides renting a boat, the Biesbosch is also the perfect location to enjoy a nice walk through nature. Me and my boyfriend have already visited this beautifull location multiple times this year just to enjoy a relaxing walk. Overall it is really nice to notice the seasons change while visiting through the year.
Take a Cave Tour in Maastricht
Descend into the underground world of Maastricht and embark on a cave tour to explore the fascinating network of caves and tunnels beneath the city. Learn about the geological history of the caves and their use throughout the centuries, from sheltering during wars to storing goods.
A cave tour will be an activity you will definetely not forget. Not only is it a learning experience but also not something that you can do everywhere. Besides that the caves in Maastricht are one of the longest cave systems that are so well preserved. Me and two friends did our first tour when we had a spa day near Maastricht. It was al of our first time and were happy to share this new experience. The caves are only open for guided tours but they are very well prepared with tourguides that have a lot of knowledge of the case systems and it history. Recently I visited the other side of this very same cave system but this time in Belgium, but times have been a great time!
Experience Mudflat Hiking (Wadlopen)
Head to the northern province of Friesland and experience the unique activity of mudflat hiking, known as Wadlopen. Join a guided tour across the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, walking on the seabed exposed during low tide. Marvel at the vast expanse of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wadden Sea and learn about its rich ecosystem.
Wadlopen is such a unique experience. When we had a nice family weekend in Friesland we also tried this special activity. The most amazing part was that when we did this, we could see a peninsula on the other side. This is an activity perfect for the whole family but keep in mind that a tourguide is needed for this due to it’s knowledge and experience.
Visit the Frisian Islands (Schiereilanden)
Explore the Frisian Islands, a chain of picturesque islands off the northern coast of the Netherlands. Each island has its own unique charm, from the sandy beaches of Texel to the dunes of Terschelling and the wildlife-rich nature reserves of Schiermonnikoog. Take a ferry to one of the islands and spend a day cycling, hiking, or simply relaxing on the beach.
Just a stone’s throw from the mainland, the Frisian Islands offer an easily accessible retreat that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visiting the Frisian Islands is a popular day trip option for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and experience the tranquility of these unique landscapes.
Although the Netherlands is very small, the country has many amazing places to explore and discover. Just like the Schiereilanden. I know that since I was a child, I always wanted to visit one of the islands. Back then it was mostly because of all the movies that were filmed there due to being an amazing shooting location. Nowadays I am happy that I have had the opportunity to visit and explore two islands with my family.
Experience the Flower Parade of Zundert
Every September, the small town of Zundert in North Brabant bursts into a riot of color and fragrance during the annual Flower Parade. Having attended this spectacular event myself, I was awestruck by the creativity and craftsmanship displayed in the elaborate flower floats. Local volunteers spend months meticulously crafting these floats entirely out of dahlias, resulting in breathtaking displays of artistry and horticultural skill.
Walking alongside the parade route, you’ll be treated to a sensory feast as the vibrant colors and sweet scent of flowers fill the air. It’s a celebration of Dutch heritage and community spirit that’s not to be missed.
Discover the Historic Windmills of Kinderdijk
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk in South Holland and embark on a journey through time as you explore its iconic windmills. Having visited Kinderdijk myself, I was captivated by the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside, with its lush green pastures and tranquil canals. Walking or cycling along the scenic paths, you’ll encounter 19 well-preserved windmills dating back to the 18th century. The windmills of Kinderdijk play a pivotal role in Dutch history, symbolizing the nation’s innovative approach to water management since the 18th century. These windmills not only showcase the Netherlands’ mastery in water management but also connect to the medieval architecture and historical depth found in some of the oldest cities in the country, underscoring Kinderdijk’s relevance to the rich historical tapestry of the Netherlands.
These windmills were ingeniously designed to pump excess water from the low-lying polders, a testament to Dutch ingenuity in water management. Take your time to admire these majestic structures up close and learn about their role in shaping the landscape of the Netherlands.
Visit the Delta Works in Zeeland
Journey to the province of Zeeland in the southwest of the Netherlands to marvel at the awe-inspiring Delta Works, a testament to Dutch engineering prowess. During my visit to the Delta Works, I was struck by the sheer scale and ambition of these hydraulic engineering marvels. Standing atop the storm surge barrier at Delta Park Neeltje Jans, I gazed out at the vastness of the North Sea, contemplating the immense effort required to protect the Dutch coastline from the threat of flooding. The Delta Works not only serve as a symbol of resilience in the face of nature’s forces but also as a reminder of the ongoing battle against rising sea levels due to climate change.
A visit to the Delta Works is a perfect change to combine it with a nice romantic getaway in the Netherlands. Zeeland offers many beautifull locations, small villages or beach stays to enjoy a lovely weekend.

Combine this activity with an exciting day in Amsterdam city center. Enjoy some shopping or one of the many different food stops. Utilizing public transport is a convenient way to visit the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, ensuring easy access to this must-see destination.
Cycle the Hoge Veluwe National Park
Rent a bike and explore the diverse landscapes of the Hoge Veluwe National Park in Gelderland. Cycle through ancient forests, heathlands, and sand dunes, and keep an eye out for wildlife such as red deer, wild boar, and foxes. Visit the Kröller-Müller Museum to admire its impressive collection of modern art and sculptures, set amidst the natural beauty of the park.
Personally I have really enjoyed some walks through this amazing park. Although for me personally it’s a bit further away. It is definetly worth the drive!
Take a Cheese Tasting Tour in Alkmaar
Immerse yourself in the rich tradition of Dutch cheese-making with a visit to the historic city of Alkmaar in North Holland. As a cheese enthusiast myself, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to indulge in a cheese tasting tour at the local cheese market. Stepping into the bustling market square, I was greeted by rows of colorful stalls adorned with wheels of cheese in all shapes and sizes. Sampling a variety of cheeses, from creamy Gouda to tangy Leyden, I was struck by the depth of flavor and craftsmanship that goes into each wheel. Don’t forget to witness the centuries-old cheese weighing ceremony, a lively tradition that adds to the charm of this quintessentially Dutch experience. To enhance your cultural journey, consider exploring contemporary art galleries in Alkmaar, offering a modern twist to the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
