So, because of that, I will be sharing all my personal tips for a complete Amsterdam travel guide.
Why visit Amsterdam?
Not only is it the capital city of the Netherlands, and therefore already being a must visit. Amsterdam is also a city with a rich history. The city played a significant role during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of economic and cultural prominence from 1588 to 1672, which is evident in its art and architecture. History of Amsterdam but also parts that are important for the country. Amsterdam also gives you the perfect view of the famous canal systems throughout the city. Although Amsterdam is not the only place you can see those, as they are also found in places like Utrecht.
Amsterdam is also great for festivals or a nice day of shopping, as it actually has all the stores you could imagine. It is easy accessible, as it is close to the Netherlands biggest airport, Schiphol.
Come visit Amsterdam for its unique vibe and beautiful historic architecture! Make sure to book skip-the-line tickets in advance for the most popular tourist attractions like the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum to avoid long waits and ensure you don’t miss out.
Sightseeing & Activities:
In Amsterdam there is never a day with nothing to do. So because of that I have summed up some of my favorites or even must-sees on your trip. Start your day of by just exploring the city by foot and enjoying the amazing city.
- Shopping: As said before, Amsterdam is the perfect place to spend some (a lot) money during a shopping spree. You should definitely check out the ‘9 Straatjes’, where you will find all kind of cute boutique shops. Don’t forget to hop in some tourist shops to secure your Amsterdam t-shirt or magnet. Looking for a luxury experience? Check out the ‘PC Hoofdstraat’ for the right stores.
- Rijksmuseum: If you ask me, this is for sure the main museum of Amsterdam. Admire some world famous artists like Vermeer, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. There are also some changing exhibitions so there will always be something interested for everyone. Besides the museum you can also check out the amazing building where to museum is in located. Win!
- Canal Tour: Of course, you can walk beside the canals and explore them that way, but, when in Amsterdam go for the full experience and get on board of a canal boat. Not only will you see the city from the waterside, the tour guide will also tell you more about the history of Amsterdam and some specific buildings. A canal cruise is a must-do activity, offering unique vantage points and insightful commentary.
- Amsterdam City Card: Consider getting the Amsterdam City Card, a popular digital pass that provides access to main attractions, public transport, bike rental, a canal cruise, and over 70 museums including the Rijksmuseum. It’s a convenient and economical way to explore the city.
- Walking Tour: Take a walking tour through significant historical locations and neighborhoods in Amsterdam, such as the Anne Frank House, the Jewish Quarter, and the Red Light District. These guided tours offer a deeper understanding of the city’s history and culture.
- Anne Frank House: Amsterdam is as mentioned, a city for of history. History is then something you will also find at the Anne Frank House. Knowing the history behind this historic building, this won’t be a fun, laughing activity. However I think it is super interesting to learn more about such a big part of Dutch history. Interested in visiting? Definitely make sure that you have booked and reserved tickets online, as it can get super busy!
- Nightlife: Amsterdam has a big nightlife going on. Are you staying in the night and looking for a nice place to party? Just head over the area surrounding Rembrandplein and you will find multiple places to enjoy a drink and some music. Or head out of the city center to Amsterdam Arena, with multiple concert locations like AFAS Live and Ziggodome.
Food & Drink:
Amsterdam is a city for with food spots. Going from restaurants to small street vendors, there is something for everyone! My number one tip would then also just be to explore the city and just choose something to eat when you see something interesting. Keep in mind that it is the Netherlands number one tourist city, so with that you will also find some spots that are not specifically good, but hyped up. Be aware!
Not to say that Amsterdam doesn’t have some amazing food places. Here are my favorite special spots:
- Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx: A small store located in the city center of Amsterdam. This is my favorite spot to get some nice fries in the city. The line goes very quickly and before you know it you have some delicious dutch fries.
- Van der Linde: The place where you will find the most delicious and most fresh ice cream. there is only one flavor, Slagroom (Whipped cream) but that is no problem for sure! Keep in mind that you can only pay with cash. ATM’s are scattered throughout the city.
- De Drie Graefjes: Looking for the best cake in town? De Drie Graefjes represent! Just a few months ago I went there to celebrate my birthday with a nice piece of cake and it was so nice! The restaurant is located right in the city center.
Day Trips:
Amsterdam is the perfect base to explore the rest of the Netherlands. It’s important to venture beyond just Amsterdam and explore other cities, towns, the Dutch countryside, seaside, and other popular destinations. With the second biggest train station you can actually head over to every direction. Some of the best places to visit in the Netherlands:
- Utrecht: My all time favorite city in the Netherlands, Utrecht. Giving even the same historic feeling as Amsterdam but then with less crowds. Utrecht also has a lot of museum option going on like the famous ‘Spoorwegmuseum’. When visiting Utrecht, a must thing to do is to enjoy a lunch or dinner directly besides the canals!
- Den Haag: The political city of the Netherlands. Den Haag is just as Amsterdam, one of the biggest cities of the Netherlands. Den Haag is perfect to combine with a visit to the Westfield Mall and the beaches at Scheveningen. Walk over the pier and enjoy a nice bbq on the beach.
- Maastricht: Although it’s a bit further than the other cities, I still wanted to put it in our list. Mainly because, the Netherlands is small so it is still not so far away. But also because Maastricht will give you a whole different side of the Netherlands. Not only you will experience it while just looking around, you will also notice it with the culture and people. Maastricht is definitely a must-visit in the Netherlands!
Practical Information:
Amsterdam is a city super easy to navigate. I think around 90 percent of the locals speak English, so no problem there! Although feeling cosy, keep in mind that it is a super touristic place.
If you are coming by car, consider parking in a Park and Ride area, as it is a lot cheaper. Personally I prefer parking the car at Amsterdam Arena P&R. Just take the metro to the city center (10 minutes).
For those flying in, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the main international airport. It is conveniently close to the city center, with airport shuttles running frequently, making your arrival and departure hassle-free.
A great way to explore the city is by using the I Amsterdam City Card. This digital pass offers unlimited use of public transport, bike rental, a canal cruise, and access to over 70 museums, including the Rijksmuseum. It also includes skip-the-line tickets for the Van Gogh Museum, providing efficient and easy transportation options around the city.
Amsterdam is a city then you can visit any time of the year. The one thing the Dutch hate the most? The ever changing weather. So check the weather forecast and take the right clothes with you!
Amsterdam, the city where everything is possible. Although it is super busy and loud, it is still fun to visit each year. I hope with the above tips you will also have a great time in the capital city from the Netherlands!
